Whilst January can feel a little gloomy and like you should be setting lots of new resolutions, let it instead be a little reminder to embrace the small steps which can help to make a BIG difference. Here, Psychologist and host of Therapised Podcast Dr Lalitaa shares five simple things we can all embrace this January... and beyond.
1. Set Small, Achievable Goals
Instead of a long list of resolutions, focus on 2-3 small, specific goals. Then break these down into simple steps and set short-term milestones. Celebrating small wins, like going for a walk three times a week or organising one space at a time, keeps motivation up and builds positive habits. Remember - it doesn't all need to be done all at once either... slow and steady wins the race.
2. Create New A Morning Routine
A simple morning routine, even just 10 minutes of stretching, journaling or setting intentions, can set a really positive tone for your day ahead. Find what works for you and use those first few moments to prioritise yourself. You could also try a walk outside or reading a few pages whilst you sip your morning coffee.
3. Declutter Your Space For A Fresh Start
A clear space = a clearer mind and I love to use January as a time to have a clear out. Take some time to organise your living and working space. Decluttering isn’t just about removing physical items but also about creating a calming environment. Start small and tackle one drawer or shelf at a time. Be sure to enjoy how even little changes can bring a sense of renewal.
4. Prioritise Connection
Make it a goal to connect with friends or family more... even if just briefly. Whether it’s a text, a coffee chat, or a quick call, staying connected with people who uplift you is a great way to boost your mood, reduce stress and stay accountable. This one really can be quite transformative for so many reasons.
5. Reflect And Set Intentions
Set aside a few minutes each week to reflect on how you're doing. How are you feeling? What's working right now and what's not? What can you perhaps focus on in the next week? Regular check-ins with yourself help keep you on track and encourage self-awareness which can help bring clarity and purpose to your year. When we have intentions set, we are clearer in our minds too. Taking pen to paper is a great way to do this and can again be a really good addition to both your morning and evening routine.
